The Importance of Charity in Islam and Humanity
Charity holds a central and sacred place in Islam. It is not only an act of kindness but a fundamental duty that strengthens faith, purifies wealth, and builds a compassionate society. In Islam, charity is known as Zakat (obligatory charity) and Sadaqah (voluntary charity), both of which encourage believers to care for the poor, support the needy, and uplift humanity.
The Holy Qur’an repeatedly emphasises the importance of helping those in need. Allah says:
“Establish prayer and give Zakat, and whatever good you put forward for yourselves – you will find it with Allah.” (Qur’an 2:110)
“The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains.” (Qur’an 2:261)
“And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive.” (Qur’an 76:8)
Islam teaches that wealth is a trust from Allah, and within it lies the right of the less fortunate. By giving charity, a person purifies their earnings and develops humility, gratitude, and empathy. Charity is not limited to money — even a kind word, a smile, or helping someone in difficulty is considered an act of charity.
The teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ strongly encourage charity and compassion. He said:
“Charity does not decrease wealth.” (Sahih Muslim)
“The best of people are those who are most beneficial to others.” (Al-Mu’jam Al-Awsat)
“Even a smile is charity.” (Sahih Muslim)
Beyond religion, charity is a universal human value that unites people across cultures, nations, and beliefs. It promotes love, compassion, and social harmony. When individuals help one another, communities grow stronger, poverty is reduced, and hope is restored in the hearts of those facing hardship. Charity reminds us that humanity is one family, and caring for others is a shared responsibility.
In today’s world, where many face poverty, illness, and hardship, the spirit of charity is more important than ever. By giving selflessly and supporting humanitarian causes, we fulfil a religious duty and contribute to building a more just, caring, and peaceful world. Charity is a bridge between faith and humanity — a powerful force that transforms lives, spreads kindness, and brings blessings to both the giver and the receiver.
